The Outdoors Childhood Review

The Outdoors Childhood Review is independently examining the case for natural environment learning, play and adventure provision for children and young people in the UK.

The Review doesn't question whether kids are getting time outdoors.

It’s about what their outdoors time achieves - and about the connections our children are building with nature.

The Evidence

The benefits of nature connection and outdoors childhood experiences have been highlighted in studies for universities, charities, government and more.

But these have been presented one article at a time, over a period of time.

We are bringing together those valued findings in one place, at one time for clarity and impact.

Our Review team is collating a bundle of evidence. They plan to source further contemporary findings and opinions, and present the combined evidence to changemakers, as a substantive case for attention.

We hope The Outdoors Childhood Review will lead to a moment of collective accord; similar to the public focus on food quality, school meals, public smoking, etc.

This site provides a snapshot of information from popular sources around the topic. Please have a read - and think about whether small changes at a family or community level can make a tangible difference for young lives.

Get Talking

The Review started with a few parents and has quickly grown in momentum with credible support and encouragement. It has no external funding and is fully independent.

We hope the UK will soon get talking about – and acting purposefully on – the issues highlighted by The Outdoors Childhood Review.

It’s a conversation we’d like to hear taking place from the school-run, to council chambers, from places of worship, to youth groups, from the family dinner table to the park, from cafe culture, to third-age social events.

And absolutely from the kids; their voice needs to be listened to intently.

We firmly believe this is a purposeful moment of public focus, which is gathering widespread support from parents, children, public figures, third sector, corporations and all political leanings.
